BMW 525iX TOURING (E34) - 1992 - BARBADOSGRUN
Being an earlier six-cylinder model, this car comes with the smaller kidney grille and amber indicators. More noticeably, it is finished in “Barbadosgrün” a very distinctive colour that was more often seen on the E31 8-Series. This was a special order from the first owner in 1992, a Swiss gentleman who then held on to this car for over twenty-five years. He also had the good taste to specify the fantastic double panoramic sunroof, that still works perfectly today.
The bodywork, though overall in good condition, needed some attention. It has therefore recently had new front wings fitted and the jacking points and sills have also been fixed. Lastly, it has been fully polished and detailed to make it look as good as possible.
This car is trimmed with BMW’s high-end buffalo black leather which has aged remarkably, showing only minor signs of use on the driver’s seat. The door cards are overall in good condition though the rear ones are starting to sag a little. The headliner has been re-trimmed in its original grey color.
The list of equipment includes cruise control, dual zone air conditioning and a trip computer. A very discrete OEM looking single DIN head unit has been fitted in order to add modern day connectivity to the car.
First engine to be fitted with BMW’s famous VANOS variable valve timing system, the M50B25TU produces 192 hp with characteristic straight-six smoothness. The ZF five speed automatic transmission also feels relatively modern offering Sport and Snow modes.
The rear biased all-wheel drive system, though similar to the one pioneered by the E30, adds further innovation to the previous design. As part of our maintenance process, all differentials were of course flushed.
Prior to sale, a service has also been performed with fresh oil and filters, and new radiator hoses were fitted.
In contrast with all other E34’s, the 525iX was fitted with a steering rack rather that a recirculating ball system, thus improving it’s handling despite the driven front axle. In keeping with the idea of making this car feel planted on the road, tie rods, sway bar links and bushings have been replaced and an alignment carried out.
The rear self-levelling hydraulic struts were replaced a few years ensuring peace of mind for the years to come. With the recent work carried out on the sills and jacking points, this car’s chassis now looks as solid as it should.
